Occupational Therapy

Paediatric Occupational Therapy or OT focuses on helping children of all ages with physical, sensory or cognitive challenges be as independent as possible in all areas of their lives. After all, children do not have occupations. But a child’s main job is playing and Learning.

Occupational therapists look at children from a holistic perspective. They are trying to determine where delays or limitations are coming from especially in areas of daily living skills, play skills, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory processing skills, Learning skills, social skills.

Why might my child need to see Occupational Therapists?

  • Delays in attainment of milestones like for neck control, sitting, crawling, standing, speech
  • Have gross motor difficulties like limitations in movement (climbing jumping), weak musculature, postural Difficulties, fine motor difficulties like weak hold of small things like spoon,pencil-crayons, bottle caps.
  • Sensory Processing Difficulties- Is Visually distracted always, do not responds to name, do not follow instructions, is fearful of swings, slides, merry go rounds, always lost, do not interact with others.
  • Learning Difficulties- Inattention, Issues with memory, judgment, problem solving, understanding concepts, limited sitting tolerance, reading and writing issues.
  • Oral/speech/Feeding difficulties
  • Social Interaction Difficulties- Child is less interactive, gets anxious in strange places, strangers.
  • Behavioral Issues- Aggressive behaviours, anxiety, frustration in tolerance, always crying, tantrums.

What do Occupational Therapists Do?

After a detailed Evaluation process, according to profile of child, Occupational Therapist prescribes activities which help child to improve performance in daily living skills, play skills and academic skills in collaboration with speech Therapist, Educational therapist, Physiotherapist, and Psychologist
